Sweet Home Alabama has plenty of ghost stories. In this second part of Haunted Places in Alabama, let’s explore a few more bone-chilling haunts, unknown — unexplained mysteries and terrifying ghostly encounters.

Baldwin Hill, Livingston

Lucy and Ken Gallman's century-old home atop Baldwin Hill in Livingston is said to be haunted. Residents have heard strange ghostly voices saying “Robert Ennis is dead” and “Can you hear me”. They have also heard the sound of a bouncing ball and seen floating apparitions disappearing into another room. It is said that the ghost of a dreadfully burned female is regularly perceived up on the highest spot of Baldwin Hill rearranging orbs around.

Redmont Hotel, Birmingham

Birmingham’s oldest and most historic hotel, the Redmont Hotel, is haunted by the ghost of a woman in white on the 9th floor; ghost of a former owner, Clifford Stiles, in the halls and ghost of famous singer Hank Williams, who has been seen in the room he stayed in right before his death. Visitors have also reported ghostly occurrences such as the opening of doors and movement of furniture or baggage.

The Tutwiler Hotel, Birmingham

The Tutwiler Hotel is said to be haunted by the ghost of Colonel Tutwiler, for whom the hotel was named. According to a bartender working at the hotel in 1995, he experienced a multitude of ghost sightings where the lights of the bar and kitchen would turn on by themselves. Be respectful to the ghost of Colonel Tutwiler, and he’ll spare you of any hair-raising paranormal troubles.

Jemison Center or Old Bryce Hospital, Northport

A former insane asylum “Old Bryce Hospital” had a reputation for treating its patients horribly, even verging on torture. Visitors claim to feel hot and cold spots, see items moving of their own accord and hear ghostly sounds and footsteps. Many have seen the tail of a doctor’s coat travel through the halls. Ghostly screams, scuffling of feet and the unexplained creaking of doors have been reported.

Bluff Hall, Demopolis

Bluff Hall, built in 1832 and purchased by the Marengo County Historical Society in 1967, is said to be haunted by the grandson of the original owner Francis Strother Lyon. Apparently that little boy’s ghost hangs around looking for his mother.

Lucas Tavern, Montgomery

Lucas Tavern is claimed to be haunted by Eliza Lucas, who ran Tavern from 1820 to 1840. Patrons reported seeing a short woman dressed in a Victorian dress waving kindly and smiling at passers-by in the doorway of the tavern.

Bill Sketoe’s Hole, Newton

Bill Sketoe is reported to haunt the Choctawhatchee River bridge in Newton. During the Civil War, Bill Sketoe was hanged from a tree, by the local Confederate home guard as a deserter. According to Bill, he was innocent, actively serving soldiers on leave to visit his sick wife. After Sketoe died, the hole that had been dug beneath his feet always remained, no matter how many times it was filled! It is said, in the years following his execution the entire lynching party died of unnatural causes. The hole was finally filled in 1990 finally and in 2006 a statue was raised near the execution site, telling Sketoe's tale.

Highway 5 Ghost, Lynn

This Highway 5 road is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a woman who was killed by a trucker. Rumor has it that she travels up and down the road searching for her killer and has been reported to bang on truck doors.

Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores

The fort took heavy fire throughout the bloody Battle of Mobile Bay. It is rumored that visitors can hear the cries and screams of men at night. Many have seen the ghost of a solitary woman searching for justice after being killed at the fort.

Spring Hill College, Mobile

Spring Hill College is reported to be haunted by Father Mueller, former math professor, near his old office; and a figure of hooded monk hovering over the graves late at night. It is said Father Mueller appears to students who need assistance with seemingly impossible math questions.
