Wyoming, the cowboy state, draws millions of tourists each year to its seven national parks, including Yellowstone. It is also home to many chilling, untold bloodshed stories and tragedies of trapped spirits of broken hearts, patients, children, criminals, owners, staff, and soldiers. No doubt, you may encounter ghosts at haunted historical sites, hotels, libraries, cemeteries, prisons and theatres throughout Wyoming.
1. Occidental Hotel, Buffalo
The Occidental Hotel has been a Wyoming landmark for 140 years. Built in 1880, the Occidental Hotel has been considered among the most haunted places in Wyoming. It is reportedly haunted by the daughter of a prostitute who died on the upper floor. Her ghost has long dark hair, wears a white dress and has been heard moving furniture and making strange noises. She's likely to pull on guests' hair, grab their hands, or tap them on the shoulder.
2. Irma Hotel, Cody
The Irma Hotel was built by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1902 and named after his daughter. The hotel is home to friendly ghosts, who float through the halls; hang out in a few of the rooms especially Room No. 35 and 16; make mischief in the dining room. Few visitors have seen ghosts of Buffalo Bill and Irma Cody. Water in the bathroom turns on and off by itself, and guests have reported clothing and other personal items neatly moved to different places while they were sleeping.
3. The Historic Plains Hotel, Cheyenne
Since 1911, The Historic Plains Hotel has had a prominent spot in downtown Cheyenne. According to the hotel’s many legends, a bride named Rosie and her groom spent their honeymoon here. One night she caught her husband chatting, laughing and taking a prostitute upstairs. She grabbed his gun and killed them before committing suicide in her honeymoon suite. The spirits of the three have been frequently seen by employees and guests of the hotel.
4. Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone
Yellowstone has many ghost stories, but the most famous tale is that of a headless bride who walks down the stairs from the Crow’s Nest in the Old Faithful Inn. A wealthy woman from New York fell in love and wanted to marry a much older man who worked in their house as a servant. Her father tried to convince her that the servant was a gold digger, not a loving gentleman. Her family clarified that if she married this man, they would disown her. She took her inheritance and ran away with servant. On their honeymoon in Yellowstone, he chopped off her head and ran away with her money long before anyone found her body. Now the headless bride has been spotted wandering around the hotel in search of her lost love.
5. Sweetwater County Library, Green River
Built on top of a graveyard in the 1980s, abnormal occurrences have been reported in Sweetwater County Library. Books flying off the shelves, computers turning off and on, lights switches being flipped and your name being whispered. They keep a log of staff and patron experiences. The log is still available at the Circulation Desk and new chronicles are still being added to its pages.
6. Wort Hotel, Jackson
Built by the Wort brothers in 1941, The Wort Hotel was Jackson’s first luxury hotel and continues to serve the city as a prominent place of business. Like many historic properties, The hotel has a spooky past and is home to multiple ghosts. Its haunting came 20 years later in the 1960s when two small children were killed by a family member while staying in one of the hotel rooms. The children still roam the halls of the hotel, playing games and causing mischief. You can also spot the ghost of Bob, a longtime maintenance man at the hotel, who is still drifting around the property.
7. The Virginian Hotel, Medicine Bow
More than a century old, the historic Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow probably is probably visited by ghosts, according to its owner. This hotel’s most notorious ghost is the woman in beige. Dressed from the early 1900s, she is said to have stayed at the hotel while waiting for her fiancé to come from the east. When he never arrived, she flung herself out of her third-story room window. Some guests also report hearing a large crash coming from this end of the hallway. Patrons have also reported seeing ghosts of young children, “Riley” former employee and “Hank” cowboy.
8. Acme Theatre, Riverton
Built in the 1920s, Acme Theatre in Riverton just might be the scariest place to catch a horror movie, or you may just find yourself scared by more than what's on the screen. Many patrons have claimed to see a man up in the balcony watching shows with them. The man's identity remains a mystery, but has been described as dressed in vaudeville era clothing, and thought to have been a former performer in the early days of the theatre's operation.
9. The Sheridan Inn, Sheridan
Opened in Sheridan in 1893, Sheridan Inn became a favorite of travelers and locals. It was once home to Buffalo Bill Cody. It is said that one of its beloved employees, known as Miss Kate, is said to have never left. Miss Kate moved to Sheridan in 1901 and began working at the inn. In 1906 she moved into her room on the third floor where she spent the rest of her life. After her death in 1968, while the inn was being renovated, her ashes were put in the walls by a friend. She is now the guardian of the inn. You may feel her in a cold spot or have the lights turned on or off on you.
10. Wyoming Frontier Prison, Rawlins
Since 1901, The Wyoming Frontier Prison has been used for almost 80 years. Many say that those who lost their lives in the prison never left. One of the most enduring urban legends about the Prison is that of the "Pie Lady". A woman living in Rawlins used to bring the prisoners pies. Upon release, one prisoner tracked her down, raped and killed her. He was then sentenced back to prison, where the prisoners took revenge into their own hands and hung him from the top floor. The scene plays on a loop in the prison even today, if you catch it at the right time. Visitors also claim to catch glimpses of ghosts of inmates who never got their afterlife parole.
