Belen is the second most populous city in Valencia County. With 135 assaults and over 260 larcenies happening over a year, Belen is the assault and larceny capital of the New Mexico. This small town with nearly 7500 residents got much bigger issues to tackle as it ranked 1st in both property crime and violent crime. That unfortunate ranking comes about in large part as a result of over 140 violent crime and 370 property crime incidents. While poverty rate and unemployment rate in city remained over 23% and 10%, violent crime almost 425% higher than national average should not surprise anyone.
