Located just 1 km from Mirik Lake and 2 km from Mirik Bus Stop, lies the sacred Bokar Monastery. This ancient Buddhist monastery is situated atop a hill and offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of Mirik. As one of the largest monasteries in Mirik, it is a must-visit attraction.
Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche founded the Bokar Monastery in 1984 as a small retreat center. However, upon the request of his disciples and lay people, Rinpoche began to accept monks for training, and the center was transformed into a monastery. Today, the monastery belongs to the Kagyud order and serves as the seat of the Venerable Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche.
Following the founder's passing in 2004, the monastery is now guided by his close disciple, Venerable Khenpo Lodro Donyo Rinpoche. Currently, the Bokar Monastery is home to approximately 500 monks who dedicate themselves to practicing and sustaining the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. Additionally, the monastery houses a monastic college named Shedra.
Perched at the highest point in Mirik, the Bokar Monastery stands as a serene structure that can be easily spotted from the lakeside. The gilded statue of Buddha that stands at its heart takes pride in being one of the most sought-after monasteries for Buddhists in India. Close to the monastery, there are sunset and sunrise points that provide stunning views of the town of Mirik as the sun rays dance over it.
