From 1951 to 1964 it served as the headquarters of the southern division of United States Steel and housed nearly 1,500 employees. In 2004 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Sited on a ridge on E.J. Oliver Boulevard near Miles College, the building overlooks the Fairfield Works. The front facade of the building features projecting, glass-enclosed rooms resembling stadium pressboxes, which provide a view of the ironworks. " |

It runs roughly along 41st., 42st., 43rd., 44th, and 45th Sts., and M and Martin Aves. The listing included 355 contributing buildings on 150 acres (0.61\u00a0km2). It includes 20 of the original 30 square blocks of Belview Heights, a neighborhood developed in the former town of Ensley, Alabama. The district has \"an impressive assemblage of architectural styles popular in residential suburbs throughout the United States in the first half of the 20th century\" and in particular \"boasts one of the largest saturations of Tudor Revival architecture in Birmingham, reflecting the popularity of that particular style from the 1920s through the 1940s. The district contains examples of Colonial and Spanish Revival, American Foursquare, minimal traditional, and ranch houses as well as a large number of Bungalow/Craftsman dwellings. Of the 423 resources located in the historic district, 154 can be classified as Tudor Revival-style.\" It includes two non-residential buildings:

Led by JoAnne Akalaitis from 1991 to 1993 and by George C. Wolfe from 1993 to 2004, it is currently led by Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham. The venue opened in 1967, with the world-premiere production of the musical Hair as its first show. The Public is headquartered at 425 Lafayette Street in the former Astor Library in Lower Manhattan. The building holds five theater spaces and Joe's Pub, a cabaret-style venue used for new work, musical performances, spoken-word artists, and soloists. The Public also operates the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, where it presents Shakespeare in the Park. New York natives and visitors alike have been enjoying free Shakespeare in Central Park since performances began in 1954. Notable productions in recent years include: The Merchant of Venice, featuring Al Pacino as Shylock (2010); Here Lies Love (2013), by David Byrne; Fun Home, adapted from Alison Bechdel's illustrated memoir of the same name (2013); Eclipsed, by Danai Gurira and featuring Lupita Nyong'o (2015); and Hamilton (2015), by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
