The A. J. and Emma E. Thomas Coley House (also known as the Coley-Joiner House) is a historic residence in Alexander City, Alabama. The house was built by A. J. Coley, a physician who was born near Alex City in 1858. After studying medicine in Philadelphia and New York City, Coley returned to Alabama and married Emma E. Thomas. In 1895, the couple built their house in Queen Anne style, a popular style for houses in the late 19th century. Coley served as mayor of Alex City from 1902 to 1903. In 1909 Coley sold the house to another physician, James Adrian Googan, who used it as his residence and an infirmary. Except during World War II, when it was subdivided into apartments, it has been maintained as a single-family home since Googan's death in 1920.

A shed roofed porch stretches across the first floor of the façade, and wraps part way around each side. The porch is supported by pairs of round columns, and has a decorative pediment over the entryway. Pairs of one-over-one sash windows flank the front door, which is surrounded by a transom and sidelights. Two pedimented gables dominate the second floor of the façade, with similar gables on the rear of the house and a single gable on each side. The interior is laid out in a traditional center-hall plan, with four large rooms on each floor in the front of the house, and smaller rooms towards the rear.

The house was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1989 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Russell Family Historic District 0.47 7
Historic, Historical Places, Interesting Places, Historic Districts

Russell Family Historic District is a historic district in Alexander City, Alabama. The district is a collection of houses built by the family of Benjamin Russell. Russell and his children founded the Citizens' Bank of Alexander City in 1900, followed by the Russell Manufacturing Company in 1902. The company, along with B. B. Comer's Avondale Mills, turned Alex City into one of the textile centers of the South.

In 1913, the family built several houses on a hillside overlooking the mills. Benjamin's youngest son, Ben, built a Classical Revival house with a hip roof and façade dominated by four columns with Corinthian capitals. Benjamin's sister, Sally, built a brick, Classical Revival residence with doubled Ionic columns. Thomas Commander Russell, Benjamin's brother who served as Alex City's mayor from 1907 until 1947, built a tan brick Craftsman-style house.

In 1937, the second generation of the family began to build on the family land. Elisabeth, Benjamin's daughter, built a Classical Revival house inspired by the "Tara House" from the film Gone with the Wind. The next year, Thomas Russell built a Colonial Revival near-replica of George Washington's Mount Vernon. In 1946 Robert Russell built a house with decorative, wrought iron railings evocative of houses in New Orleans and Monterrey, Mexico.

The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

The Place Beyond the Pines is a 2012 American epic crime drama film directed by Derek Cianfrance with a screenplay by Cianfrance, Ben Coccio and Darius Marder from a story by Cianfrance and Coccio. The film tells three linear stories: Luke (Ryan Gosling), a motorcycle stunt rider who supports his family through a life of crime; Avery (Bradley Cooper), an ambitious policeman who confronts his corrupt police department; and two troubled teenagers (Emory Cohen and Dane DeHaan) who explore the aftermath of Luke and Avery's actions fifteen years later. The supporting cast includes Eva Mendes, with Ben Mendelsohn, Rose Byrne, Mahershala Ali, Bruce Greenwood, Harris Yulin, and Ray Liotta.

Cianfrance was inspired to write The Place Beyond the Pines based on his experiences as a father. Coccio and Marder, who shared similar interests in film and media, helped write the script. Cianfrance envisioned the main themes to be about fathers and sons, masculine identity and legacy. The film reunites Cianfrance and Gosling, who had previously worked together in 2010's Blue Valentine. The role of Luke was written for Gosling, as he expressed an interest in playing a bank robber. Filming took place in Schenectady, New York, during the summer of 2011.

The Place Beyond the Pines premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, followed by a United States theatrical release on March 29, 2013. Focus Features purchased the distribution rights after being impressed by the film screening. It received a generally positive response from critics and moderate success at the box office. The soundtrack was composed by Mike Patton and included music by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and Ennio Morricone.
